How to Choose the Best Plastic Surgeon
Choosing the best plastic surgeon requires careful consideration of several factors. Below, Dr. Holzman offers advice on how to ensure a prospective surgeon has the requisite education, training, skill, and experience to deliver your desired results.
- Dr. Holzman recommends verifying that a prospective surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), as this ensures they have undergone rigorous training and adhere to high standards.
- Reviewing before-and-after photos of the surgeon’s previous work can enable you to assess their skill and preview the types of results you can expect.
- Consider the surgeon’s hospital affiliations or where the surgery will be performed, as facilities should be accredited for safety.
- Communication is key, so during consultations, ensure a prospective surgeon listens to your concerns, clearly explains the procedure—including risks and recovery—and that you feel comfortable with their approach and demeanor.
- Patient reviews and testimonials can offer insight into others’ experiences with a provider, including information about the office and clinical staff.
- Finally, trust your instincts: it is important to choose a surgeon who makes you feel safe, and understood, and whom you trust to achieve your desired outcomes.
Why Is Board Certification Important for Plastic Surgeons?
Board certification for plastic surgeons is a crucial marker of a surgeon’s expertise, skill, and commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care and safety. It signifies that the surgeon has undergone rigorous education and training, including medical school, a residency in plastic surgery, and often additional fellowship training. After completing this extensive training, the surgeon must pass comprehensive written and oral exams administered by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
This certification process ensures that the surgeon has acquired the necessary knowledge and technical skills to perform plastic surgery procedures safely and effectively. It also indicates that they are committed to continuing education and staying abreast of the latest advancements and safety standards in the field.
Furthermore, board certification requires surgeons to adhere to ethical standards, enhancing patient trust. Hospitals and surgical centers often require surgeons to be board-certified to grant them privileges to operate within their facilities, further underscoring the importance of this certification for ensuring quality patient care and safety in plastic surgery.
