Breast Implant Animation Deformity
Breast implant animation deformity (dynamic breast deformity) is characterized by excessive movement or distortion of the breast implant with activities that contract the chest muscles. The implant may appear to move or may ripple when the patient contracts her pectoralis muscles. This common condition is seen in patients who have a submuscular (under the muscle) breast augmentation. Many patients opted to have this type of augmentation as the submuscular position hides the implant, so that it looks more natural. This was especially true with saline implants. The problem occurs when physically active patients flex the pectoralis muscles during exercise. The implants appear to “pop out” and may look squished or may ripple.
If you have dynamic breast deformity, there are several techniques used to correct the problem. Dr. Steven Holzman is a trained cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon who has the experience and expertise to diagnose and correct your deformity. Many deformities are easily corrected by changing to a softer, silicone implant placed on top of the muscle. In rare instances, the use of an acellular dermal matrix may be needed to fix the deformity. Dr. Holzman has extensive experience using dermal matrices, as this technique is frequently utilized in breast cancer reconstructions. Whatever your needs, Dr. Holzman will work with you to find the best solution to your problem.
For patients who had a submuscular breast reconstruction for cancer and are experiencing dynamic breast deformity, corrective surgery usually involves moving the implant to a prepectoral position using an acellular dermal matrix to soften the contour and form a pocket for the implant under the skin.
Breast animation deformity is a common problem for patients with a history of submuscular implantation, and as a cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, Dr. Holzman is uniquely qualified to repair this deformity.
